Jerome Silbergeld speaks about the Chineseness of Chinese motion pictures. An expert on traditional Chinese painting, Silbergeld’s book on painting was assigned when I took a survey course on Chinese painting, and I would read it and assign it again in turn – it’s the best book I’ve yet seen on the format itself, explaining how lines and brushstrokes are make, how scrolls work as a medium.
